If you’ve ever met me in person, I’m pretty sure you know I’m a big fan of live tweeting. There’s no better way to interact in real time with your followers than a live Twitter feed; it’s one of the best opportunities to gather heartfelt comments, giving you a clear insight into the lives of your audience.
So, when I saw that the charity Shift MS was offering a weekend takeover, it was a bit of a no-brainer. The fledgling @ExploringMS account that I work on voluntarily had around 39 followers – Shift MS has over 10,000, so I knew this was going to be a great way to raise our profile at no cost (essential as we have no budget!)
What I didn’t know was that author J. K. Rowling would join in the conversation – imagine my nerdy delight! With nearly 10 million followers, this was a real coup for @ExploringMS and gave us more publicity than we could have hoped for, free of charge. Following Ms. Rowling’s tweet, we have had more followers, likes and retweets, and awareness of our project is steadily increasing.
So you see, my enthusiasm for live tweeting isn’t simply as a way to chat with someone on a wet winter weekend – it truly DOES work; it’s intense, fast-paced and all-consuming but the results are well worth the effort.
I will be doing more live tweeting for a TED talk in March, (full details to come) and invite you to join me for a roller coaster ride in cyberspace (Harry Potter costume optional).
